How to install applications for study of religious texts

Grumble removed the instruction I had written for installing gnomesowrd (Bible study tool) and zekr (Quran study tool): diff I believe these religious text study tools are quite useful for a large number of people, also these instruction were included in the gutsy's guide. I will add those instructions again. If anyone thinks these instruction should not be added to the guide, please first discuss here before removing them. --Mderakhs 17:35, 9 May 2008

All programs are useful for a small number of people and many therefore need a guide. (The programs used by the largest number of people often don't require a guide.) Most of the programs and situations in Ubuntuguide concern unusual problems; if their instructions were removed just because they addressed a focus audience, this guide would be very slim indeed!

The guide is completely revamped from version to version, because some programs are no longer functional six months later.

I encourage anyone that removes instructions to be sure that the described program is actually defunct before removing its instructions from the guide.

Don't remove something just because you personally think it is trivial. -- Perspectoff 18:09, 26 May 2008 (EEST)

DVD Support

Is the method on the page a little complex? I managed it with:

sudo apt-get install debhelper fakeroot build-essential
  sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh

Answer to "DVD Support" ^^^

So what :b In the medibuntu repository there are more packages.

But since it is done that way as well, I shall add it.

But I prefer that we install a package via PMS not scripts and such ways ...

Answer to Answer to DVD Support

Given that most of the users of this page will be new an inexperianced users, it's much simpler for them to type in a couple of lines to the console than to start editing configuration files. I'm comfortable with vi, but most people aren't. The entire philosophy of Ubuntu is that it is easy to use, and I feel that this place should reflect that. I think that the simpler method should be used, unless there is some particular advantage from the method described on the page at the moment?

Graphics Drivers

Is there any advantage to using Envy than the simpler, built in approach of System --> Administration --> Hardware drivers?

--Nerrep 19:03, 25 April 2008 (EEST)

Nope. This is actually the preferred method and Alberto Milone the author of envy is working on debian packages for Intrepid that interface with "Jockey" (the app you mentioned above). --Michaelfavia 00:09, 17 July 2008 (EEST)

Answer to DVD Support

The new users have to learn the package management system. If you install through scripts, you have ""broken"" your system. Then they think that everything is installed that way. Besides, if you install libdvdcss2 from Medibuntu, if there is a revision someday, you get it.

Answer to Envy question

Envy installs the latest ATI or nVidia drivers. The repository driver is older.

Apt links

can you add apt links (like apt://foo)?

Documentation Style

Using code boxes to denote both Terminal commands AND GUI navigation is confusing. Suggest a separate format for each.

Documentation Scope

The scope of the document should be defined and stated up front, eg. 'This guide is intended to...'

The basic document would include instructions on getting 'basic' Ubuntu installed and its 'primary' set of applications configured and working. This primary set of applications also needs to be defined up front.

All secondary application guides that then fall outside of scope should be relegated to separate pages/sections.

For example, Ubuntu Hardy Heron comes pre-canned with RhythmBox. Rhythmbox is therefore a primary application. A 'basic' installation of Ubuntu therefore has audio capability (which may need to be configured). Installing Amarok (and other media players) is optional and should be considered a secondary application.
